It is a question of First Amendment Rights.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"
The government has ABSOLUTELY not right to tell any religious group that it MUST pay for those things which it considers to be contrary to its teaching. To do so is prohibiting the free exercise of religion.
One is never forced to work for the Catholic Church. If one wishes to have this coverage, one can look for other employment.
Today, in an inept attempt at removing the issue, President Obama proposed shifting the responsibility to the Insurance Companies.
This is how the US Council of Catholic Bishops responded.
Referral is Not the Answer, Rescinding the Mandate Is
The last paragraph sums it up:
The best solution is this: restore religious liberty
by rescinding the mandate.
